Director: Nicolas Roeg
1971 / 110min / 35mm
At once one of the sexiest and most frightening thrillers of its era, Roeg’s film finds amorous couple Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie decamped to Venice to flee the memory of their daughter’s accidental death, only to be haunted by a childlike apparition in a red cloak who leads them a twisted chase through the picturesquely crumbling alleyways and piazzas of the old city. The source is a short story by grande dame Daphne du Maurier, who was linked to the venerable gothic romantic tradition, but the elliptical editing is distinctly, dramatically modern.
