Adapting Steven King’s 1977 novel The Shining Kubrick turned it into something like a grotesquely distorted creative autobiography, the story of an obsessive perfectionist artist—Jack Nicolson’s struggling would-be novelist Jack Torrance—whose crippling case of writer’s block and maddeningly dull caretaker residence at the vast, isolated Overlook Hotel has him frightening wife Shelley Duvall and, finally, reaching for the fire axe: all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy! A descent into madness shot with terrifying lucidity, and the rare film in which almost every frame could be called iconic.

Introduction from Reed Morano on Saturday, April 8th at 9:00pm
