Director: Steven Soderbergh, Michelangelo Antonioni, Wong Kar-wai
2004 / 104min / 35mm

Antonioni’s final film—and the end of his 45-year artistic dialogue with Guerra, here adapting one of the “nuclei” sketches in Antonioni’s 1983 collection That Bowling Alley on the Tiber—was this, the kicker of a triptych anthology film featuring contributions from Wong Kar-wai and Steven Soderbergh, in which the long-ailing Antonioni gave rich, full expression to his erotic imagination in a way not seen since 1982’s Identification of a Woman, crafting a sort of sensual fable that unfolds against the backdrop of crumbling Tuscan ruins. An intoxicating swansong, and an apt end to a career defined by an ongoing tango between Eros and Thanatos.
