Ozu’s gorgeous 53rd and final feature is a return to a favorite theme, the poignant comedy of marriage, with beloved regular Chishu Ryu as a father giving away his daughter and preparing for another, final goodbye. Good Morning’s satire of creeping consumerism has become more bitter here, the feeling of incoming winter chill is sharper, the entire project imbued with a tang of regret—incidentally, the title literally translates to “The Taste of Autumn Mackerel.”
