Director: Michael Glawogger, Monika Willi
2017 / 107min / DCP

Glawogger was shooting in Liberia when his untimely death from malaria, at age 54, brought one of the most extraordinary careers in contemporary nonfiction cinema to a close. Editor Monika Willi, the Austrian filmmaker’s close collaborator, here credited as co-director, would shape the breathtaking footage that Glawogger had accumulated in nearly five months of filming—the beginning of a proposed yearlong globe-trot—in Africa, Italy, and the Balkans into this elegiac, oft-philosophical imagist opus, inspired by Glawogger’s stated desire to make a film “[giving] a view of the world that can only emerge by not pursuing any particular theme, by refraining from passing judgment, proceeding without aim.”

Introduction by editor Monika Willi on Saturday, March 29th
