Brighton Beach has never looked as bleakly beautiful as it does in Gray’s snow-swept family melodrama disguised as a crime thriller, describing the tragic chain of events when mob contract killer Tim Roth returns home to Brooklyn to a dying mother (Vanessa Redgrave), disdainful father (Maximilian Schell), worshipful kid brother (Edward Furlong), and the looming threat of deadly reprisal for past transgressions. Lit like a Georges de La Tour painting and suffused with suffocating sense of Old World sadness, Little Odessa is one of the most distinctive and distinguished American feature debuts of the ’90s.
