The Milky Way
Director: Luis Buñuel
1969 / 105min / 35mm
The Catholic Church was long a favorite target of Buñuel’s, but never did it receive such a thorough and extended drubbing as in this sacrilege-run-amok, Dada satire. On their way to the holy city of Santiago, two vagabond-pilgrims slip through centuries of saints, sinners, and heretics. Choose your own blasphemy: there’s the Pope facing a firing squad, nuns performing a crucifixion, and a seductive Satan in the form of Pierre Clémenti.
