Remaking the 1978 Franco-Italian farce La Cage aux Folles with Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, and a screenplay by his old partner Elaine May, Nichols produced an enormous commercial success that proved irresistible to many who had never thought to see a film with gay protagonists.
