The Wiz

No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: Sydney Lumet, Sydney Lumet
1978 / 134min / DCP

A lavishly designed retelling of L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, itself based on an all-Black 1974 Broadway musical, this Motown Productions mega-movie stars Diana Ross as a Harlem Dorothy whisked away to a New York City-inspired Oz, its awestriking soundstage sets erected in Queens’ Astoria Studios. An unparalleled cast, including Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow, Lena Horne as Glinda the Good Witch, and Richard Pryor in the title role.

""The Wiz, a big-screen musical that has become a rite of passage for the Black community, will be on view at Metrograph, hosted by East Harlem's GG & POP. Come celebrate and sing-along to this cult classic film- The perfect multigenerational event for this years' Black History Month and all year long!"—Jessica Ann Peavy

Selection and introduction from Gloria-Gwendolyn & Pearl, assisted by their parents, Jessica Ann Peavy, artist and founder of East Harlem's GG & POP, and Random Acts of Flyness producer Tamir Muhammad
