ACE Presents: Day Night Day Night
Director: Julia Loktev
2006 / 94min / 35mm
Before her epic My Undesirable Friends made Loktev one of the most-discussed figures in contemporary nonfiction, there was Day Night Day Night, the director’s riveting fiction feature debut, closely following 48 hours in the life of an unnamed young woman, played by an entrancing Luisa Williams, as she makes preparations to detonate herself in a Times Square suicide bombing in service to an unknown cause. Shot with remarkable immediacy and adroitness by cinematographer Benoît Debie, best known for his collaborations with Gaspar Noé, and lent a sense of subtly rising tension that reaches a point of near-suffocation by editor Michael Taylor, Loktev’s austere film—and its brooding, taciturn leading lady—exert a sinister undertow pull of fascination.
