The Inugami Family

Director: Kon Ichikawa

1976 / 146min / DCP

Based on Seishi Yokomizo’s 1951 bestseller The Inugami Curse, adapted before and after Ichikawa’s 1976 blockbuster, but arguably never bettered—mystery/melodrama The Inagami Family takes place in the fallout following the death of the wealthy patriarch of the eponymous clan, whose members start to drop off like flies in the most unnatural of ways, leaving detective Kosuke Kindaichi (Kōji Ishizaka, who would play the same role for Ichikawa in four more Kindaichi films) on a race to ferret out a culprit before the reading of the will. Simmering resentments, a veritable army of closeted skeletons, and more twists than a super-coaster make this a must-see for the whodunnit addict.
