It Follows
Director: David Robert Mitchell
2014 / 100min / DCP
Mitchell’s Detroit-shot sophomore film, winner of the Next Wave award at Austin’s Fantastic Fest in 2014 and the breakout horror phenomenon of the following year, is a work of potent sexual dread, in which erotic congress transmits something much worse than a dose of clap: the attentions of a spectral, shape-shifting entity that pursues the afflicted with methodical single-mindedness, a pursuit that ends in terrible carnage. Enigmatic and unsettling, its thick atmosphere of paranoia incalculably added to by a soundtrack courtesy electronic musician Disasterpiece (Rich Vreeland), per Pitchfork “a score that announces when something is about to happen, only to suddenly upend expectations and leave the room on edge.”
