ACE Presents: Ghost World
Director: Terry Zwigoff
2001 / 111min / DCP
The first film adaptation from the work of caustic cartoonist Daniel Clowes, Ghost World is a post-apocalyptic survival film set in the suburban AnyAmerica of 2001. Thora Birch and Scarlett Johansson co-star as two too-smart girls, freshly matriculated from high school and rudderless in early adulthood, who employ scalding irony as a ward to fend off the toxic effects of existence in a cultural wasteland, discovering an amiably creepy kindred spirit in the form of Steve Buscemi’s weedy record collector, Seymour. An anthem for opting out and modern-day classic, with editor Michael R. Miller displaying the gift for mordant, off-kilter comedy he’d honed working with the Coen Brothers.
