Train to Busan
Director: Yeon Sang-ho
2016 / 118min / DCP
Divorced, depressed, and brutally overworked, hedge fund manager Seok-woo (Gong Yoo) has hardly any time to devote to his young daughter, Su-an (Kim Su-an), so the birthday trip they’re taking together—a 280-mile train ride from Seoul to Busan, where they’re going to meet with her mother—is a very, very big deal. Life or death, in fact, because while en route a zombie apocalypse breaks out across Korea and on the speeding train itself, leaving Seok-woo, Su-an, and a dwindling handful of uninfected passengers to fight for their lives all the way to their final destination… if it’s still there. Jang’s score, mixing electronic and orchestral elements, moving freely from mournful to menacing, and contributing immeasurably to the film’s mounting momentum, is among his very finest.
