The Remembered Lives of G. Chaplin & C. Saura

The first daughter of Charlie Chaplin and Oona O’Neill, Geraldine Chaplin was born in Los Angeles County but raised largely in Switzerland, where she acquired the Spanish and French that would be invaluable in her later international career. In 1967 she arrived in Calanda, Spain, to play a double role in the Vertigo-inspired thriller Peppermint Frappé, directed by Carlos Saura, then very much a rising star. The resulting film won the Silver Bear for Best Director at the 18th Berlin International Film Festival, and Chaplin and Saura would not only become lovers but would go on to form among the most vital and fecund creative partnerships of late 1960s and ’70s European cinema, their output including titles, like the absurdist Ana and the Wolves and the inspired allegory Cría Cuervos, that are rightly regarded as some of the greatest Spanish cinema has to offer—and which we are delighted to bring back to New York screens.
