Zeinabu irene Davis Selects
Accompanying the restoration of her bold, formally daring feature Compensation (1999), American filmmaker Zeinabu irene Davis, a veteran of the LA Rebellion, selects two feature films and a shorts program that celebrate the rich offerings of the Black political film canon: her audacious documentary Spirits of Rebellion, a series of early and contemporary short films, and Sarah Maldoror’s incisive, landmark anti-colonial film Sambizanga.
“I chose Spirits of Rebellion to set up the series to illustrate the lineage of the LA Rebellion filmmakers, of whom I am a member. It was important for me to choose both features and shorts because, as filmmakers, we don’t always get opportunities to make features. These bold, original works by multigenerational filmmakers deserve to be seen and discussed by audiences in person whenever possible.” —Zeinabu irene Davis
