Neo Sora Selects

Accompanying the US theatrical premiere of his visually daring, experimental sophomore feature Happyend, writer-director Neo Sora joins Metrograph to present two playful, spirited films that inspired his futuristic teen epic: Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s The Marriage of Maria Braun (1979) and Old Hollywood classic Design for Living (1933) by Ernst Lubitsch.

“These were films that I came back to again and again while writing Happyend. These two are examples of films with playfulness, levity, melodrama, and scale that taught me how to let my own film breathe.” —Neo Sora
