The argument has been made that, sometime in the 1960s, rock and pop stars usurped the place once securely held in the popular imagination by movie stars. What is certain is that on-stage charisma can and does very often translate to charisma in front of a camera, something that filmmakers—along with the built-in box-office appeal certain musicians, with their rabid fanbases, bring to the table—have been taking advantage of for decades.
