Japanese Soundtrack of Youth

To supplement our run of Plastic, Daisuke Miyazaki’s 2023 glam rock musical revolving around the bonding properties of musical obsession, Metrograph presents Japanese Soundtrack of Youth, an infectious mixtape of films, including cult classics by Shunji Iwai (All About Lily Chou-Chou) and Macoto Tezuka (The Legend of the Stardust Brothers), in which, as in Miyazaki’s film, fictional bands—Exne Kedy and the Poltergeists, Lily Chou-Chou, the Stardust Brothers—provide legitimately fantastic tunes on the soundtrack. A series that pays tribute to the transcendent power of popular music (and the rabid hero worship it encourages) among kids coming of age in the land of “idol music” and city pop.
