Among Friends
A program of films that, disparate in their countries of origin and the eras they represent, are united by their heightened, sensitive attention to the intricate, subtle, and oft-unspoken dynamics of female friendships and the manner in which established cliques—often forged in school, in the workplace, or in a shared living space—that at one time seem as vital as air can prove, ultimately, ephemeral and subject to change according to circumstance. Accompanying Metrograph’s 25th anniversary re-release run of Jeong Jae-eun’s Take Care of My Cat, a group portrait of five young women coming of age in turn-of-the-millennium South Korea, this series celebrates a diverse selection of girl gangs and gal pals as seen by luminaries like Michelangelo Antonioni (Le amiche), Claude Chabrol (Les Bonnes Femmes), Nobuhiro Yamashita (Linda Linda Linda), as well as emerging talents like Singapore’s Siyou Tan (Amoeba).
