Costume Drama – Sam McKinniss

The stuff you see in movies is crazy!

Published in conjunction with the artist’s show held at the Michael Ovitz collection in Los Angeles, 2021. Impressively designed by the stalwart Sean Manchee with an eye towards artist books, gallery catalogues and un/reality. This deftly titled Costume Drama mixes full bleed imagery, down to the gutters in occasional spreads, with eye tweaking white space and minimized imagery on others. Expertly printed by Dusty Hollensteiner at Publicide.

Featuring 21 works of art, installation views, artist statement and a conversation between McKinniss and Michael Ovitz.

Costume Drama is also a Major Online Website!

From the publisher:

Painter Sam McKinniss sources his works from images of recent pop cultural phenomena he finds using Google Image Search, such as the much celebrated and widely discussed portrait of Prince, painted and exhibited in New York immediately following the beloved pop star’s unti-mely death. He is inspired by themes or narratives focu-sing on romance or tragedy, beauty, perversion, innocence and its destruction. Most often his paintings are portraits of celebrities such as movie stars and musicians, while at other times he finds landscapes or animals as suitable subject matter.
