The film with which James Gray shed the framework of American genre film, this very loose reworking of Dostoevsky’s (or Visconti’s) White Nights stars mainstay Joaquin Phoenix, brilliant as an unhappy adult adolescent in Brighton Beach torn between family duty and desire in the form of two women: a nice, parentally approved Jewish girl (Vinessa Shaw) and a dangerous and alluring shiksa (Gwyneth Paltrow) who offers a passport to exotic Manhattan.
