Two young depressives (Lee Ki-woo and Uhm Ji-won) randomly run into each other after two years of distance, but their attempt at rekindling romantic feelings results in a suicide pact. In playful Hong Sang-soo mode, Tale of Cinema uses the film-within-a-film format to tell their story as well as that of a filmmaker (Kim Sang-kyung) who sees see a movie that he believes was based on his life, and who meets the actress from the film in the hopes of turning their on-screen relationship into reality. “The title doesn’t lie,” wrote The New Yorker, “there are filmmakers lurking here, and their involvement in the unfolding action highlights Hong’s multilayered, self-deprecating self-portrait—and his ambivalent view of a milieu that is inescapably his own.”
