Titled after Bill Withers’s revered 1972 album, Still Bill is the ultimate tribute to the American music legend who passed away earlier this year. While he might have been considered an unlikely musical sensation in childhood, he rose from a Navy man and West Virginian factory worker to a major singer-songwriter and musician whose contributions to music history include the classics “Ain’t No Sunshine” and “Lean on Me.” Through television appearances and performances from all eras of his career, and interviews conducted at the time of filming—just as he was turning 70—a clear, inspirational portrait is drawn of a man driven by the love of vocation who was able to carve a place for himself without playing the fame game, and who wasn’t afraid to cut his career short to focus on family and other life beyond touring. His daughter Kori appears in the later part of the film, providing a touching transition as audiences witness Withers passing along his musical legacy to the next generation.
