Eleven-year-old Lonnie (Sarah Boyd) is a Lower East Side kid who comes from money, while her teenage pal Karen (Rainbow Harvest) doesn’t come from much of anything at all. At first these opposites attract, but then budding hormones and first crushes further complicate their cross-class relationship, depicted with intelligence and delicacy by director Marisa Silver, the daughter of Joan Micklin Silver, who took home the Sundance Grand Jury Prize for this tender and faithful portrayal of female friendship that’s also the screen debut for a very young Alyssa Milano.
