After Julia is sent to the penitentiary for the murder of her lover, she gives birth to a son. Bringing up a child in captivity is difficult, but to Julia, the only thing that now matters is this new being that accompanies her. Her fellow inmate Marta becomes her ally; her mother, Sofía, her opponent. One attempts to teach her how to be a parent in the least appropriate place; the other wishes to take over raising the child, so he can grow up unrestricted. Pablo Trapero’s powerful film, starring his frequent collaborator Martina Gusman as Julia, explores the question of whether it’s best for a child to be brought up close to his mother under harsh conditions, or separated from her in freedom.
