The first film of Mohsen Makhmalbaf’s “Poetic Trilogy” begins with an elderly couple stopping by a stream to wash their vividly woven traditional Persian rug (“Gabbeh”). A beautiful woman, depicted in the rug’s intricate design and also known as Gabbeh, suddenly comes to life and tells a heart-rending story of love and loss. Imbued with the ideas of Sufism, the lyrical magic-realist tale, told with Makmalbaf’s usual eye-popping colors, was banned in Iran for its “subversiveness.”
