In this particular motion picture, Kurt Russell, in the company of Easy Rider star Peter Fonda, surfs a tsunami wave as it surges down Wilshire Boulevard, the spectacle realized by way of the crummiest VFX you’ve ever clapped eyes on. This information can either be received as a warning or as an invitation; you know what kind of person you are: decide accordingly. Carpenter and Russell’s maligned return to the post-apocalyptic Snake Plisskin saga, filled with scientific, withering body-blow jabs specifically directed at Hollywoodians—there’s viperous material concerning theme parks and plastic surgery—but also broadly aimed at an image-obsessed United States that vacantly gloats in the mirror as it crumbles. We may never know why it wasn’t a popular success.
