Bob Wiley (Bill Murray), a troubled but lovable therapy patient, seeks help from noted psychiatrist Dr. Leo Marvin (Richard Dreyfuss). When the therapist leaves town to go on a quiet family vacation, Bob, afraid of being alone, follows—showing up unexpectedly at Dr. Marvin’s lakeside retreat. Bob becomes that dreaded person: the houseguest that just won’t leave, and as he endears himself to the doctor’s wife and two children, he increasingly drives his doctor mad. Frank Oz’s brilliant comedy of high anxieties was made during a ’90s Murray pinnacle, between Quick Change and Groundhog Day.
