One of the best F. Scott Fitzgerald screen adaptations is one of the least seen—not a gaudy Gatsby, but a supremely sensitive telling of one of his droll and perfectly formed short stories, made for PBS’s American Playhouse series and featuring an ideally cast Shelley Duvall as a shy young woman who’s encouraged by a popular flapper cousin to take on the modern Jazz Age styles, only to seemingly succeed in her new role all too well. An essential entry in the Joan Micklin Silver filmography (that also includes Chilly Scenes of Winter and Crossing Delancey), both richly comic and surprising.
