F.V.V.A. follows Retour d’un Aventurier’s lampooning of postcolonial materialism, showing how a humble clerical worker, Ali, grows increasingly fixated with the markers of success—the title abbreviation stands for Femmes, Voitures, Villas, Argent (Women, Cars, Houses, Money)—and finally slides into crime to finance his lifestyle. Shaki, set in the Oyo State of western Nigeria, shows a Yoruban king ascending to power, as Alassane explores the intermixing of traditional Aborisha customs with elements from Protestantism and Islam.
