Anthony Roth Costanzo, internationally celebrated countertenor, classical impresario, and this year’s New York Philharmonic Artist-in-Residence, teams with Metrograph to present Authentic Selves: The Beauty Within, a series of films exploring the knotty complexities of identity that begins January 24 with Alain Berliner’s 1997 Ma vie en rose and continues through June. Authentic Selves spotlights films that explore the distance between perception and expression, relating to a paradox at the center of Costanzo’s own art and stage presentation: “If I sound different from the way I look,” Costanzo asks, “how can I best embrace my own authenticity?” Questions like this are never easily answered, but this is a collection of films that dare to ask them.
Authentic Selves will continue through June 2022.
