Amateur actors culled from the local theater in the Italian village of Buti make up the cast of Straub and Huillet’s stirring ode to resistance, comprised of a chorus of readings from Elio Vittorini’s Women of Messina, which describes the rebuilding of a village destroyed in World War II, in a new, utopian form.
