A TALE BY MICHEL DE MONTAIGNE

Straub’s film draws on Montaigne’s recounting of a near-fatal horseback riding accident, and how his ordeal—and, by association, any human suffering—can open a path to transformation and salvation. The text, recited by Barbara Ulrich, suggests Straub’s reflection on his own mortality, as well as the still-recent loss of Danièle Huillet.
