The work of composer Arnold Schönberg, a touchstone in several Straub and Huillet films, is the basis for this atypically sound stage-shot work, based on Schönberg’s 1929 one-act opera of the same name, which depicts—in screwball comedy-inspired style—one acrimonious night between a husband and wife who’ve just returned from a party.
