Elio Vittorini’s 1949 novel Women of Messina provided the inspiration for these paired films, conceived as companion pieces to Sicilia!, both of which focus on an Italian peasant community as they attempt to establish a cooperative in their mountain village and protect it from the incursions of capitalist wreckers.
