Shot in Syracuse and Messina, Straub and Huillet’s tragicomedy—based on Elio Vittorini’s 1941 anti-fascist novel Conversations in Sicily—follows a Sicilian returning to his native island after a long stay in New York City, introducing along the way a host of villagers representative of humble peasant fortitude.
