Ujică’s documentary epic is a montage tour de force, drawing from a quarter century of stage-managed state propaganda, home movies, and other archival sources in order to illustrate the rise and fall of Romania’s notorious totalitarian and his wife, Elena, executed after the fall of the Communist regime in 1989.
