Shot in Sweden with renowned cinematographer Sven Nykvist, as Tarkovsky was already heavily afflicted by the lung cancer that would end his life, The Sacrifice is one of cinema’s greatest final testaments, set at a birthday gathering that’s interrupted by news warning of an imminent nuclear holocaust. Gorgeous and deeply affecting, it would win the Grand Prix at Cannes.
