Sokurov’s epic first feature was a shot heard ’round the world of cinema—namely, the single continuous shot that lasts the length of the film, winding through the galleries and corridors of Saint Petersburg’s Winter Palace on the trail of a ghostlike narrator who, along his journey, encounters real and imagined figures from 300 years of Russian history.
