Six years after The Tempest, Jarman returned to Shakespeare with this painterly work inspired by his love poems—particularly, his 14 sonnets addressed to the unnamed young man scholars refer to as the Fair Youth. Judi Dench’s readings of the sonnets accompany Super 8 images both blossoming and barren, tracking love through pleasure and pain.
