LE JOLI MAI
DIRECTOR: CHRIS MARKER AND PIERRE LHOMME
A snapshot of Paris in the spring of 1962, in the aftermath of the ceasefire with Algeria, Lhomme and Marker’s lyric, spirited, and enormously generous city symphony looks at the lives of a broad cross section of Parisians—salesmen, young lovers, clergymen, engineers, immigrant students—who can be heard to discourse on life, love, happiness, technology, and everything else under the sun. Cinematographer Pierre Lhomme provides the beautiful on-the-fly photography, while the poetry of the voiceover is entirely Marker’s own.
Screening in the series Icarus Films at 40.
