DIRECTOR: KON ICHIKAWA

Hitting up the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo with an army of cameramen, Ichikawa turned out a dynamic documentary that altered the entire vocabulary of modern sports cinematography, at once epic and intimate, delving into the psychology of the athlete. Said Ichikawa: “I tried to grasp the solemnity of the moment when man defies his limits, and to express the solitude of the athlete who, in order to win, struggles against himself.” One of the most exquisite films ever made.

Tokyo Olympiad is screening as part of Metrograph A to Z, a collection of films we think everybody should see. Click here for more info.
