Olmi’s hired-hand feature film debut was supposed to be a showcase for the Edison-Volta company’s new hydroelectric dam, but he instead turned out a minutely-observed character study in which an isolated older dam caretaker is seen showing the ropes to a new, young, pop radio-addled employee, a story told through the rituals and rhythms of work against the backdrop of the Italian Alps, filmed in stunning ‘Scope.
