A double dose of D.A. Pennebaker from the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, filmed live on the ground and only to see the light of day twenty years later, when both documented performers were long gone. Jimi uses footage unincorporated in Pennebaker’s game-changing rock doc Monterey Pop (1969), and adds an investigation into Hendrix’s past in the London rock scene, while Shake! more than earns its title, basking in the sheer wriggling physical volatility of Redding’s performance.

Jimi Plays Monterey & Shake! Otis at Monterey are screening as part of the series 4th of July at Metrograph: The Concert Film. Click here for more info.
