A rare contemporary silent film, shot in beautiful black-and-white in downtown New York, Sidewalk Stories updates Chaplin’s The Kid, the tale of a tramp whose life is transformed after he begins to take care of an orphaned toddler, to a modern context; the result is a film about homelessness in New York that is serious without being condescending, a work of social advocacy and touching humor.

Sidewalk Stories is screening as part of Metrograph A to Z, a collection of films we think everybody should see.
