Based on a Meiji-era fable and kabuki play, Demon Pond takes place in a village that must fend off a mythic creature that lives in local waters: the only way to keep it at bay—and stop it from flooding the town—is to ring a bell three times a day. The great Japanese New Wave director—best known for Pale Flower (1964) and Double Suicide (1969)—crafted this bewitching fantasy.
