The Sea Hawk

1940 / 127min / 35mm

DIRECTOR: MICHAEL CURTIZ

CAST: ERROL FLYNN, BRENDA MARSHALL, CLAUDE RAINS, DONALD CRISP, FLORA ROBSON

Errol Flynn and Michael Curtiz made up one of the great star-director teams in Hollywood. Here they tell the story of a spry, piratically-dashing captain of the good ship Albatross, running raids on Spanish galleons in the time of Queen Elizabeth I—though anti-fascist screenwriter Howard Koch drew close parallels between the ambitions of the armada and Hitler’s blitzkrieg, with Flora Robson’s Elizabeth warning against “when the ruthless ambitions of a man threaten to engulf the world.” (No comment.)
