A who’s who of postwar Euro stars—including Fernando Rey, Delphine Seyrig, and Bulle Ogier—convene for a swank dinner party that never occurs, their attempts to sit down to a meal thwarted by a series of increasingly absurdist interruptions. A drawing room comedy played according to dream logic, this is perhaps the most subversive film ever to win an Oscar (much to Buñuel’s horror).
