“Bermanesque” has become a misused code for a type of international art cinema, and leads to a general overview of greatness, without appreciating how, on a film by film basis, perhaps no other modern filmmaker made so many masterpieces over a continued period. Whether or not Shame is the greatest of all Bergmans is not the question, but it is one of the greatest of all films. Ullman and Sydow are a couple riding out an ongoing war on a remote island, their psychodrama played against mobilizing tanks and scorched earth. It’s shattering.
